Overview of the Position:
Professional Linguistic Upper Studies (PLUS) runs summer English language study and travel programs for international high school students across North America. The programs allow students the opportunity to take English classes and explore the surrounding regions while staying at North American colleges and universities.
 
The Academic Supervisor is a seasonal, full-time, salaried, and in-person position which manages the logistics of PLUS’ academic program at a certain campus. Duties include managing a staff of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructors and specialty course instructors, coordinating teachers’ schedules, assigning teachers to classrooms, assigning students to classrooms (based on placement tests), supervising and providing feedback on instruction, addressing any issues as they arise, and providing customer service to students and their chaperones. This position is not eligible for on-campus housing. Travel to and from campus as part of your commute is not compensated. Costs related to parking may not be included, but complimentary parking permits may be available depending on the campus.

Time Commitment:
  • The employment period for the Academic Supervisor position is generally 4-8 weeks during the summer, depending on the needs of the campus.
  • The Academic Supervisor is expected to be present during all class sessions. Classes are Monday-Saturday, on average 4-5 times a week (with some Saturday mornings required). Some weeks may require up to six days of classes. Most lessons are 8:30am-12:15pm, with some possible additional afternoon classes 1:15pm-5:00pm. Some work outside of class hours will be required. Peak enrollment is usually the last two weeks of July.
Compensation:
  • Wages are between $1,200 - $1,280 per week
 
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The following is expected of the Academic Supervisor:
  • Standard Expectations
    • Interact with groups of international high school students and their group leaders in a professional, enthusiastic, and customer service-oriented manner
    • Be familiar with, adhere to, and enforce PLUS policies and procedures, including emergency and public health protocols
    • Ensure the safety of all participants
    • Be familiar with campus-specific information
    • Maintain frequent communication with PLUS staff
    • Assist with emergency situations, as needed
    • Complete all PLUS assessments received during employment period
    • Assist in duties other than the aforementioned and the following, as assigned and as they arise
  • Academic Program
    • Manage all logistics of the site-specific academic program
    • Manage all instructors, including coordinating their schedules, reviewing and approving time sheets, supervising and providing feedback on instruction, and assigning them classrooms based on the list of available classrooms provided by PLUS
    • Together with instructors, create a safe, comfortable, and engaging learning environment for all students
    • Review the curricula provided by PLUS to be adequately familiar with lesson plans. Instructors may supplement the curriculum with their own materials, as appropriate.
    • Download and review all online placement test scores per session; assist with sorting students into levels and classes based on test scores
    • Consult with instructors after the first lesson to ensure students have been placed into the correct level; conduct assessments of students’ oral proficiency, as needed
    • Provide superior customer service to students and their chaperones
    • Meet with all chaperones at the beginning of each session to provide an overview of the academic programs and answer any questions; meet with chaperones as needed and as requested during the remainder of each session
    • Check all attendance sheets within the first 15 minutes of class and immediately address any student absences with group leaders and the rest of the PLUS team to locate students
    • Copy any worksheets needed per class and distribute to instructors as needed
    • Distribute classroom supplies to instructors as needed
    • Communicate with the host institution regarding classroom needs and technology issues, as needed
    • Coordinate the completion and distribution of end-of-course certificates
    • Attend and present at the students’ graduation ceremony
    • Give presentation about programs
    • Conduct a one-hour observation of teachers (at minimum) and provide feedback to instructors
    • Conduct performance evaluations for each teacher
    • Fill in as substitute teacher for in-person and online lessons as needed
    • Oversee select online instructors and classrooms, as needed
    • Collaborate with the instructors and PLUS Head Office regarding instructional methods and the PLUS curriculum
    • Attend training session and any additional meetings organized by the PLUS Head Office
    • Train site-specific instructors
    • Maintain frequent and professional communication with instructors
Qualifications and Desired Skills:
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. required
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Bachelor’s degree required; TESOL certificate and/or Master’s degree preferred
  • Prior teaching experience required; prior EFL/ESL teaching experience strongly preferred
  • Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Prior management and coordination experience strongly preferred
  • Prior customer service experience strongly preferred
  • Experience working with multicultural and multilingual classrooms strongly preferred
  • Command of Google Drive (including Google Sheets and Google Slides) and the Microsoft suite of products (including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) required
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required
  • Successful candidates will be self-motivated, professional, and adaptable, with strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, and be able to work independently.
