Professional Linguistic Upper Studies (PLUS) operates English as a Foreign Language (EFL) programs across the world. PLUS U.S. Corporation, headquartered in New York City, runs summer English language study and travel programs for international high school students in across North America. The programs allow students the opportunity to take English classes and explore the surrounding regions while staying at U.S. colleges and universities.
 

Position Overview:

The Academic Supervisor is a seasonal salaried position which manages the logistics of PLUS’ academic program at a certain campus. Duties include managing a staff of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructors and specialty course instructors, coordinating teachers’ schedules, assigning teachers to classrooms, assigning students to classrooms (based on placement tests), supervising instruction, and providing customer service to students and their chaperones.

Schedule:

The employment period is during Summer 2019. Most students are with the PLUS program for two-week sessions; PLUS runs back-to-back sessions over the course of the summer.

Students receive 30 hours of English instruction during their two-week session, approximately 15 hours per week. Each session has 8 lessons, each of which is 3.75 hours. Classes are held Mondays-Saturdays and on average about 4 days each week. Lessons are offered both in morning classes (8:30am to 12:15pm), and afternoon classes (1:00pm to 4:45pm.) Classes are usually either morning only, or morning AND afternoon. Class sizes are generally 15 students.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage all logistics of the site-specific academic program
  • Manage all instructors, including coordinating their schedules, reviewing and approving time sheets, supervising instruction, and assigning them classrooms based on the list of available classrooms provided by PLUS
  • Together with instructors, create a safe, comfortable, and engaging learning environment for all students
  • Review the curricula provided by PLUS to be adequately familiar with lesson plans. Instructors may supplement the curriculum with their own materials, as appropriate.
  • Download and review all online placement test scores per session; sort students into levels and classes based on test scores
  • Consult with EFL instructors after the first lesson to ensure students have been placed into the correct level; conduct assessments of students’ oral proficiency, as needed
  • Provide superior customer service to students and their chaperones
  • Meet with all chaperones at the beginning of each session to provide an overview of the academic programs and answer any questions; meet with chaperones as needed and as requested during the remainder of each session
  • Copy all worksheets needed per class and distribute to instructors daily
  • Communicate with the host institution regarding classroom needs and technology issues, as needed
  • Fill in as substitute teacher as needed
  • Collaborate with the instructors and PLUS Head Office regarding instructional methods and the PLUS curriculum
  • Attend training session and any additional meetings organized by the PLUS Head Office
  • Train all site-specific instructors
  • Maintain frequent and professional communication with instructors
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

 

Qualifications and Desired Skills:

  • Authorization to work in the U.S. required
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Bachelor’s degree required; TESOL certificate and/or Master’s degree preferred
  • Prior teaching experience required; prior EFL/ESL teaching experience strongly preferred
  • Prior management and coordination experience strongly preferred
  • Prior customer service experience strongly preferred
  • Experience working with multicultural and multilingual classrooms strongly preferred
  • Command of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Google Drive strongly preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required

Successful candidates will be self-motivated, professional, and adaptable, with strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, and be able to work independently.
