Overview of the Position:
Professional Linguistic Upper Studies (PLUS) runs summer English language study and travel programs for international high school students across North America. The programs allow students the opportunity to take English classes and explore the surrounding regions while staying at North American colleges and universities.

Instructors deliver lessons to advanced-level international high school students based on the specialized curriculum provided. Instructors report directly to the Academic Supervisor. This is a part-time, hourly, and in-person position and is not eligible for on-campus housing.

Course Description:
This course is aimed at developing effective communication skills, with focus on the entertainment industry. The Movie and Communication course will provide an overview of different types of media and its effect on society. Students will hone their communication skills by studying best practices within the entertainment industry. Students will learn how to debate and persuade, develop verbal and nonverbal communication techniques, and successfully use visual communications. Using the advantage of the campus’ proximity to LA, the “Entertainment Capital of the World,” students will also be introduced to the history of cinema and the influence that society and cinema have on each other.

Time Commitment:
  • The employment period for the Movie & Communication Course Instructor position can range from 1 to 8 weeks during the summer, depending on the needs of the campus and employee availability. Most instructors teach for 2-6 weeks. In the application, there is space to indicate and explain your availability during the summer months. 
  • The schedule and hours per week vary depending on the needs of the campus. Classes are Monday-Saturday, on average 4-5 times a week (with some Saturday mornings required). Some weeks may require up to six days of classes. Most lessons are 8:30am-12:15pm, with some additional afternoon classes 1:15pm-5:00pm.
  • If approved, vacation time may be honored during the employment period for this position, but is unpaid. Peak hours can be expected when enrollment is highest, usually the last two weeks of July.
Compensation:
Pay scale is determined by campus location and program size. The pay scale for this position is: $20.00-$27.00 per hour.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The following is expected of Instructors:

Standard Expectations
  • Interact with groups of international high school students and their group leaders in a professional, enthusiastic, and customer service-oriented manner
  • Be familiar with, adhere to, and enforce PLUS policies and procedures, including maintaining Covid-19 protocols
  • Ensure the safety of all participants
  • Be familiar with campus-specific information
  • Maintain frequent communication with PLUS staff
  • Assist with emergency situations, as needed
  • Complete all PLUS assessments received during employment period
  • Assist in duties other than the aforementioned and the following, as assigned and as they arise
Academic Program
  • Deliver well-prepared lessons to diverse classrooms of international high school students in a professional and engaging manner
  • Review the curriculum provided by PLUS to adequately prepare for each lesson; instructors should be prepared to supplement the curriculum with their own materials, as appropriate.
  • Practice appropriate classroom management techniques to ensure a safe, comfortable, and engaging learning environment for all students
  • Track students’ attendance on a daily basis
  • Fill out a Certificate of Course Completion for each student at the conclusion of their course
  • Attend course-related field trip(s) with students, if any
  • Collaborate with the Academic Supervisor and PLUS Head Office regarding instructional methods and the PLUS curriculum
  • Attend training session and any additional meetings organized by the Academic Supervisor and/or PLUS Head Office
  • Maintain frequent and professional communication with the Academic Supervisor
  • Perform other duties, as assigned
Qualifications and Desired Skills:
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. required
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
  • Prior teaching experience required
  • Knowledge of the specialty course subject matter required
  • Experience working with multicultural and multilingual classrooms strongly preferred
  • Command of Google Drive (including Google Sheets and Google Slides) and the Microsoft suite of products (including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) strongly preferred
Successful candidates will be self-motivated, organized, professional, and adaptable, with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
